Michael Wood Sutton, 68, of Martinsville, IN, passed away peacefully on August 9, 2025, at IU Health Bloomington Hospice House. He was born on March 9, 1957, to the late Michael C. Sutton and Evelyn (Sutton) Hunt. He graduated from Indiana-Purdue University of Indianapolis with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue’s School of Science. During his life, he worked for his father as an architectural draftsman, and for Geiger & Peters, Albright Welding, and RAD Fabrication.
Michael is survived by his mother Evelyn Hunt, son Dustin Sutton (Christina), sister Suzanne Ayers (David), brother Kevin Sutton (Ellen), sister Nancy Kanon, half-brother Kenny Sutton, and several nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his father and his sister Patty Henderson (Cliff).
Michael was a mischievous kid, but he was fun. He had a great sense of humor and was always pulling pranks on his siblings. We will miss his devious smile. Michael enjoyed playing baseball and taught his brother Kevin how to play. He was one of the few players who threw left-handed and batted right-handed.
Michael prided himself on being a great father to his only child, Dustin. He passed along his love of baseball to Dustin who has fond memories of playing baseball with his dad and his dad being at every one of his games. Dustin also has fond memories of working with his dad building their home in Martinsville.
His family would like to offer thanks to Alan Lane, a friend who helped care for Michael in his last years, and to the wonderful nurses who helped care for Michael in his final days at IU Health Bloomington Hospital and IU Health Bloomington Hospice House.
Michael struggled with addictions throughout his life, causing physical and mental health issues. These issues may have separated him physically from his family, but he has always been in our hearts. In honor of Michael, donations to a mental health organization such as the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Indiana would be appreciated.
