Marilyn Virginia Oplinger

Marilyn Virginia Oplinger, 91, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Monday, April 13, 2026. She was born on January 10, 1935, in Chicago, IL, the daughter of the late Edgar and Phyllis (Hensler) Jones.

On January 28, 1956, she married David Oplinger in Chicago, IL. He preceded her in death on May 19, 2024. Also preceding her in death was her son Doug Oplinger. She is survived by her daughter Mari (Mike) Larkin of Plainfield; sons: Dave (Cathy) Oplinger of Indianapolis and Dan (Carla, deceased) Oplinger of Goshen. Her siblings, two sisters and three brothers, all preceded her in death. Marilyn’s legacy continues through her eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, who will cherish her memory.

An alumnus of Harper High School in Chicago, IL, Marilyn furthered her education at Chicago Teachers College, Goshen College and Indiana University South Bend. Her commitment to education was evident as she taught 2nd grade at Waterford Elementary School in Goshen for 27 years. Among Marilyn’s interests were crossword puzzles, bird watching, swimming and spending time with her grandchildren. She was formerly a member at First Baptist Church of Elkhart. 

Marilyn’s final wishes were to be cremated and laid to rest at Violet Cemetery in Goshen, where a private family memorial service will be held.
