Douglas Maines

September 3, 1968 — December 18, 2025

Douglas J. “Doug” Maines passed away December 18, 2025 at Ball Memorial Hospital, in Muncie, Indiana after a sudden illness. Doug was born in Marion, Indiana on September 3rd, 1968, son of the late Daniel W. Boone Maines and his mother, Kaaren Claire (Earle) Crotser, who currently resides in Maryville, Tennessee.

Doug spent his entire youth in Marion where he attended Marion Community Schools. As a child, Doug displayed an interest in nature and was an avid animal lover, particularly of his beloved cats Tigger and Tasha. At the same time, Doug also exhibited his talent in art, a subject he later excelled in throughout his school years.

Born into a musical family, Doug’s instrument of choice was the drums which he played joyfully and skillfully in the “Maines family studio” along with his father and brother Danny. Together they played their favorite rock music of the 70’s, and both the folk and blues music of the era, drawing on their father’s musical experience with both genres. One of Doug’s favorite memories was of participating in a drum playing workshop with Neil Pert, the famous drummer with the Canadian band Rush, Doug’s favorite rock band. While Doug and his brother Dan enjoyed the many frolics of childhood and teen years with their neighborhood buddies and their Earle and Maines cousins at family gatherings, their greatest enjoyment was found in playing the music they loved and admired. Though much of his adulthood was burdened by ill health, Doug enjoyed music his entire life and carried a remarkable memory of the music and lyrics of his favorite bands, often “air-drumming” as he listened to their songs and instrumentals.

In addition to his mother Claire, Doug is survived by his brother Daniel of Bargersville, Indiana; aunts Jan Earle, Louisville, Tennessee, Jean ( Joe) Fox, Fishers, Indiana, Catherine (Fred) Layman, Gaylord, Michigan, and Rebecca (Maines) Scheer, Marion, Indiana; cousins David E. Maines, Glenn Ellyn, Illinois, Monda (Jeff) Maines-Denault, Somonauk, Illinois, Kathryn (Bob) Eichler, Danville, Indiana, John David Earle, Fairmont, W. Virginia, Timothy (Michelle) Layman, Canton, Michigan and Elisabeth (Russ) Riley, Austin, Texas.

Doug was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents James and Jeanne (Wagoner) Earle and paternal grandparents Gerald and Ellen (Ward) Maines; father Daniel W. Boone Maines; uncles David R. Maines and George David Earle, and cousin Ellen N. Widen.

Following cremation, Doug’s remains will be returned to the nature he loved in Brown County State Park. A private family remembrance will be held in the spring time of 2026.
