Doris L. "Dee" Owens passed on July 6th, 2025 at the age of 93. She was born on November
12th, 1931 and grew up in Syracuse, N.Y. After moving to Washington, DC, she met and
married Melvin Owens. In the 50's, they moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where she graduated
from Arthur Murray Dance Studio as a certified Ballroom Instructor. In 1964, they moved to
Louisville, Kentucky. She opened the Capezio Dance Theater Shop in St. Matthews in 1971,
and later became one of the first representatives for Capezio Ballet Makers, traveling an 8-
state area. In the 80's, she was a real estate agent and relocation consultant for Paul
Semonin Real Estate. Her true love was ballroom dancing, which she taught for 50 years.
In the late 90's, she relocated to Owensboro, Kentucky, and taught ballroom dancing in the
Tri-state area. Dee started the Metropolitan Ballroom Club in Evansville, Indiana. She also
helped with a pilot program called "WOW" (Winners on Wheels), working with handicapped
children.
Dee was a member of the National Association of Realtors & American Business Women's
Association - Bluegrass Chapter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Clayton Owens of Birmingham, AL.,
who passed away in January, 1967, two sisters, Nancy Jean Henderson of Peterboro, NY.,
Mary Yvonne Tucker of Laurel, MS., and brother, James Webster, of Biloxi, MS.
She is survived by three sons, Robert Eugene Owens (Betty) of Louisville, KY., David Wayne
Owens (Annette) of Owensboro, KY., Eric Grant Owens (Vickie) of Seattle, WA. Nine
grandchildren, Philip Owens, Matthew Owens, Todd Owens, Jenny (Owens) Jones, Theresa
(Owens) Rhineburger, Clay Owens, Nick Owens, Annie (Owens) Rogers, Christopher Owens
and 22 great grandchildren.
