On Tuesday, December 13th of 2022 we said goodbye to an incredibly wonderful man, Dennis Mathews. He was surrounded by family and comforted until his final breath. Born on December 22nd, 1953 in Louisville, Kentucky he was a 1973 graduate of Stuart High School.
He leaves to cherish his memory, fianc Paula Gilliland, his loving children, Amber French (Luke) and Cody Mathews, his sister Cathy Mathews, and several other family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Deloris Mathews.
Dennis retired from Insulator Local 51. He went on to work for Churchill Downs as Guest Services after his retirement where he increased the quality of visits there for anyone who had the opportunity to meet him.
In his younger days you could find him riding his beloved Harley Davidson Sportster or livening up a party with his electric personality, magic tricks and cheesy dad jokes. Apparently he had a really great one about construction, but we never got to hear it … because he was still working on it!
As time passed, he settled into a more relaxed life of traveling, enjoying live music and theater, visiting the beach, fishing, hanging out by the pool, or grilling out for family and friends. Dennis would never turn down the opportunity to admire a classic muscle car and looked forward to devouring a corn dog while attending the Street Rod Nationals yearly. He never encountered a stranger that wouldn't end up having a fond memory of his smile. Many kind words and stories have been shared since his passing, and we know that each of you enriched his life as much as he enriched yours.
A celebration of life will be held at 9542 Wessex Place, Louisville, KY 40222 on Sunday, January the 8th from 2-5 PM.
