David Richard Thompson- “Poppy” to his beloved grandchildren- passed away peacefully at The Hospice House in Bloomington, Indiana on May 2, 2026. He was 82 years old.
Dave was born on July 5, 1943 in South Bend, IN to the late Richard “Dick” and Hazel Thompson. He was proceeded in death by his sister Judy (Cameron) Payne and his parents. He is survived by his sister Joann (CJ) Murphy, his children Mark (Sue) Thompson, Susan (Joe) Rumsey, Molly (Jason) Candelora and Jared (Dayna) Thompson, his devoted partner Nancy Evans and her two daughters, Pam Britt and Kathy Disinger and his grandkids Aidan and McKenna Gaffney and Max and Margaret Thompson.
Dave spent many years donating his time to youth baseball, most notably founding the Outer Banks Babe Ruth (now Cal Ripken) Baseball League in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina in 1985. He spent over 25 years coaching, umpiring, and serving on boards for youth baseball.
Dave grew up in New Carlisle, Indiana and became a huge Notre Dame football, Indiana basketball, Chicago Cubs AND White Sox (this of course should not be allowed) fan. His love of sports, especially Notre Dame football, would follow him throughout his life.
Dave lived all across the nation, including stops in Indiana, Michigan, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, and finally back in Indiana, spending his final twelve years traveling and having adventures with the love of his life, Nancy.
In June, Poppy‘s ashes will be scattered on the youth baseball field in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina that he lovingly maintained for many years during a celebration of his wonderful life.
