Jean Margaret Everroad, 91, peacefully passed away on Friday in her home with family by her side.
Born in Ipswich, England on April 26, 1931 to parents Elsie and Bernard Rose, Jean graduated from Cambridge with a B.S. in education. A school teacher when she married a U.S. serviceman stationed in England, she joined her husband in returning to his hometown of Columbus, Indiana in 1955. Their first home was in Taylorsville, where Jean raised her daughter Jennifer and her 3 sons Scott, Gary & Glen.
Jean was a passionate advocate for children. She served girls and young women as the Director of the Columbus Girls Club, prepared children for public school as Director of the Taylorsville Community Kindergarten, taught disadvantaged youth as a reading teacher at the Atterbury Job Corps Center, instructed and developed educational programs as the Educational Coordinator for the Head Start Program. Jean was among the first group of volunteers sworn into the newly created Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program created by the Bartholomew County Youth Advocacy Commission, where she was named Child Advocate of the Year in 1990. Jean's first retirement was in 1991 as a manager of quality conferences with the Corporate Quality Improvement Group of Cummins Engine Company. Her second retirement came in 2001 as director of Sans Souci, where the "Jean's Jar" high school equivalent education funding program continues today.
Jean was an estate sale fan, loved her pets, reading, gardening and music, but found the greatest joy being with her family.
A woman of great faith and member of Taylorsville Methodist Church since the 1970's, an informal celebration of Jean's life will be held on Tuesday May 10 , 2022 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at the Taylorsville Methodist Church.
Memorial donations in Jean's name may be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
